RHOA Email Reflector

All Rockpointe Homeowners with online computer capability are encouraged to sign-up for the RHOA Reflector. This could be one of the most valuable communications resources we have available. If you don't know what an eMail Reflector is, read the following material.

What is an email reflector?

Email reflector software allows messages to be sent to a common email address and be automatically redistributed to a pre-defined list of email recipients.

What is an email reflector used for?

A Reflector creates a virtual web-based community where every member of the community sees every message sent by members of the community. The RHOA Reflector is intended to provide this environment for the Owners of units at Rockpointe. It provides a place where ideas can be shared and mutual concerns discussed.

What is the advantage of a Reflector over face-to-face meetings?

The Reflector provides a dynamic communications channel where everyone can fully participate on their own schedule. Each message can be read at the convenience of the individual, and additional thought can go into the response before it is delivered to the others. Owners not living near Rockpointe can be just as much a part of the community as if they were local.

Are there disadvantages too?

Yes, two disadvantages that often need to be dealt with are the tendancy to respond more strongly when you are not looking the other individual in the face, and the likelyhood that someone will try to win his argument with volume rather than quality.

How do you control these situations and other problem areas?

One way is to establish an active moderator for the discussions who will screen everyone's comments and only allow them to be distributed after they have been approved. Another, is to hold the individuals responsible for monitoring their own actions and exclude them from the community if they can't be civil and a constructive part of the process.

How does the RHOA Reflector deal with these issues?

A few simple guidelines for discussion are identified to each individual that joins the community and then they are expected to police themselves. The RHOA Reflector Moderator will be a passive activity that only steps in when someone doesn't conform to the guidelines.

Who is the RHOA Reflector Moderator?

The Reflector service was established, and is coordinated by, Jim Fortney. He is the primary moderator and will act as a benevolent dictator when it comes to the Reflector and its use. Jim may select other individuals to assist him in performing this function.

Who is Jim Fortney?

Jim is an Owner at Rockpointe and lived in the community from 1974 until 1990. He currently resides in Camarillo, CA. Jim has served on the Association Board of Directors, and was instrumental in designing and establishing the financial planning structure currently used by the Association. For many years after moving from Rockpointe, Jim served as Chief Teller for the Association elections.

What if I don't like the way Jim manages the Reflector?

First, you should share your concerns with him so he can consider your point of view. Finally, it works much like the Rockpointe Homeowners Association. If you don't like the way things are being done, then you can volunteer to get involved. Maybe you can convince people to do it your way.
